How far is too far for a pickup?
A deal two hours away is only a deal if the saving beats the trip. Here’s a quick way to check.
The 30-second check
- Fuel: round-trip miles ÷ your mpg × fuel price. For example, 240 miles at 30 mpg and $3.50 a gallon comes to about $28.
- Time: what is a lost afternoon worth to you?
- Saving: compare with the best local price. If the saving is less than fuel plus time, stay local.
When the drive is worth it
- Rare or discontinued items you can’t find locally.
- Big-ticket purchases (cars, tools, furniture sets) where prices vary by region.
- Bulk lots: one trip, many items.
Before you set off
- Confirm the item is still available on the day, and get the exact pickup address.
- Ask for extra photos or a short video, especially of any flaws.
- Agree the price and the payment method in writing in Messenger.
- Bring help, straps and blankets for bulky items.
- Meet in a public place where you can; many police stations offer safe exchange zones.
